Guitar Tuition

Teaching Guitar makes up a large part of what I do, and it's somthing I've been doing since I was 16, so I take pride in doing as good a job as possible. I give lessons from my home studio as well as travel to homes in South Liverpool.

Learning an instrument should always be focused on what you want to get out of it, not just what someone else tells you is the best approach.  That’s why I try to tailor your lessons to focus on what you’re interested in.  My experience teaching has showed me that if you’re enjoying what you’re studying, you’re likely to work harder and achieve more.

I teach beginner to advanced level in two main ‘streams’ or pathways, which can be followed exclusively or mixed up depending on your needs.

My fee for all lessons is £17 per 45 minutes, or £20 per hour, with discounts available for block bookings and small group lessons of up to three pupils.

1.    Classical Guitar

My main background, based on an established finger-style technique, takes in musical notation and theory.  Having at least a basic grasp of classical guitar technique can turn an aspiring heavy metal rock god into an all round musical maestro.  It also helps build a thorough knowledge of the instrument (notes, positions, chords etc) and can link in nicely to developing a great folk/jazz/blues/acoustic finger-picking technique.

2.    Contemporary Guitar

Starting with chords, progressions and rhythm guitar before progressing to single note playing, riffs and solos, this approach gives you the key skills needed to play almost any song written in the last 100 years.  If you want to see fast results, and are willing to put in the effort you could be playing some of your favourite songs in a matter of weeks, and playing them well in months! We will agree what musical genre, band or songs you want to use to study, and they will become the basis of your lessons.

If you’re interested in booking a first consultation lesson, fill out the form on the CONTACT page, and I’ll get in touch to book you in.  I look forward to hearing from you..

What resources do I use?

To be honest, I've yet to find a guitar tutor book which covers everything that I feel is important for a guitarist to learn, so I am in the process of writing and compiling my own tutor, which has a holistic approach to guitar playing and covers classical, folk, blues and rock techniques.

In the meantime, I use 'The Guitarists Way' for beginning classical guitarists, my own library of music for intermediate to advanced players and a combination of my own and web resources for modern and popular styles.

For teaching specific songs, I use Guitar Pro software to make my own transcriptions or download ready made scores to print off.

I teach for ABRSM Classical guitar exams and Rockshool for plectrum guitar...
